What Determines MOQ for Custom EDC Products?

MOQ for a custom EDC product is not an arbitrary number that applies to every project. It reflects the smallest quantity at which material purchasing, setup, finishing, branding, packaging, inspection, and production losses can be managed economically.

What MOQ means

Minimum order quantity is the lowest quantity a supplier is prepared to manufacture or customize under a defined specification. Sample quantity, pilot quantity, and production MOQ are different decisions and should be quoted separately.

Splitting one order across colors, logos, sizes, or packaging versions creates multiple setups and smaller batches. Ask whether variants can share material, machining, packaging structure, and inspection. Do not assume every combination can be mixed.

Choose an existing platform, use a standard material or finish, consolidate variants, begin with neutral packaging, and avoid premature tooling where practical. These choices are subject to supplier and project confirmation; they do not guarantee a particular minimum.

Common mistakes

Do not compare MOQ without comparing specifications, hide forecast needs, request many variants under one total, or treat sample pricing as production pricing. The lowest quoted minimum may carry tradeoffs in unit cost, process, documentation, or repeatability.
