Why Anodized Titanium Colors Can Vary Between Batches

Anodized titanium colors can vary between batches even when the same nominal color is requested. That does not automatically indicate the wrong material or a failed process. Titanium anodizing creates color through an oxide film that interacts with light, so small surface and process changes can shift the visible result.

How Titanium Anodizing Creates Color

Unlike paint, conventional titanium anodizing does not use colored pigment. It grows a transparent oxide film. Light reflected from that film and the titanium beneath it interferes, producing the color we see. Oxide thickness relates to the electrical process, but final appearance also depends on part condition. Lighting and viewing angle can change perceived hue even on the same sample.

Surface Finish Comes First

A mirror-polished part reflects light differently from a bead-blasted part. Even under the same anodizing process, they will not look identical. How Brands Should Specify Color

A name such as “blue” is not a complete requirement. Approve physical samples representing the target and, where appropriate, an acceptable range. Record alloy, base finish, cleaning route, racking location, and inspection lighting. Photographs aid communication, but screens and camera processing make them unreliable as the only standard.

Define cosmetic surfaces, allowed contact marks, and treatment of hidden or threaded areas. For assemblies, decide whether components must match closely or whether tonal variation is intentional.

Design for Repeatability

  • Keep grade and material route consistent where practical.
  • Avoid mixing different base finishes in one color-critical assembly.
  • Put electrical contacts in concealed or agreed locations.
  • Approve samples under the same lighting used for inspection.
  • Review representative parts, not only the best sample.
  • Document cleaning, rinsing, and handling.
